T-Mobile G1

Written by ImagesLab.net on Wednesday, September 24, 2008

That's it folks, the HTC-made T-Mobile G1 is now official with pre-orders due to open over at the dedicated T-Mobile website. The device will start shipping in US stores as of 22nd October and will be selling for 179 US dollars with two-year voice and data contract.

T-Mobile will be offering obligatory voice and messaging plans for the G1 priced at 25 (unlimited data, limited msg) and 35 US dollars (unlimited data and msg) on top of their regular voice plans. The G1 is SIM-locked and it won't be available with a prepaid service.

The T-Mobile G1 will also be available in the UK beginning in November, and across T-Mobile's European markets (Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and the Netherlands) in Q1 2009. European pricing is not yet known but we guess it has to be competitive to the one of the iPhone 3G.

Hardware-wise the T-Mobile G1 sports a 3.2-inch display touchscreen display, QWERTY keyboard, quad-band GSM/EDGE and dual-band UMTS support, GPS, Wi-Fi and a built-in accelerometer. We already mentioned that the camera won't support video recording and the Bluetooth support will be limited to mono headset use only (no stereo and no file transfers). The Bluetooth functionality will be enhanced later on.

The software part of the T-Mobile G1 is much more interesting as it's the first Android device to see daylight. The G1 will make use of all Google online services such as Gmail (with push support), YouTube, Google Talk, Google Maps with Street View, AmazonMP3 marketplace for affordable DRM-free tracks and finally, Google's own Android Market, which would supply the handset with third-party applications over-the-air. A unique feature to the G1 is the embedded compass, which syncs with Maps Street View allowing live 360-degree cityscape browsing just by turning the handset around.

At this stage the T-Mobile G1 lacks MS Exchange support, but doors are opened to third-party developers. There's also no desktop synchronization client, syncing is only possible to Google online services such as Gmail, Calendar and etc.

All in all, the T-Mobile G1 is disappointing - while the Android OS sounds like a powerful base, its first implementation fails to impress. The G1 has a low-key SideKick inspired design and lacks some key contemporary features such as Bluetooth file transfers and video recording.

So we waited a whole year now just to see a poor iPhone replica with a QWERTY keyboard that doesn't even look half as good. It seems HTC have not put any effort in the design - and even the functionality is flawed. So thanks, but no thanks! Let's see the next one, please!

Nokia E72

Nokia N75

A demo video of the latest and greatest business messaging devices by Nokia leaked online revealing the yet unannounced Nokia E72 and Nokia E75. The Nokia E72 is a full-QWERTY successor of the E71, while the E75 features a hybrid form factor incorporating both a normal keypad and a slide-out side QWERTY.

Both the Nokia E72 and E75 seem to have built-in GPS receivers and advanced email capabilities. Guess the other specs will be high-end as usual.

BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220

Written by ImagesLab.net on Sunday, September 14, 2008

RIM officially announced its first phone to come in the clamshell form factor - the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220. In addition to the one-off Blackberry form factor the Pearl Flip 8220 packs a no-thrills overall functionality and large size but still very decent looks.

The highlights of the Blackberry Pearl Flip 8220 include the company proprietary OS, Wi-Fi connectivity (with UMA support) and the traditional trackball navigation. The SureType QWERTY keyboard is also on-board and so is a 3.5mm audio output jack. The internal display of the Pearl Flip 8220 features QVGA resolution and there is a secondary external display with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels.

The new BlackBerry Pearl Flip measures 101.1 x 50 x 17.5 mm and weighs 102 grams. The size puts it in the category of the bar-shaped Blackberries even when not opened so you can bet it's a large cellphone. The Pearl Flip supports microSD cards for expanding the internal memory. The final extras include a 2 megapixel camera with video recording capabilities, Bluetooth and USB v2.0.

The BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 will become available at the beginning of this fall. The pricing details are to be announced at a later date.

Celcom Xpax plan for students

Written by ImagesLab.net on Sunday, September 07, 2008

Yes... Another prepaid plan from Celcom.

IN A bid to create brand affinity at a much tender age, Celcom recently unveiled an exclusive Xpax prepaid plan targeted at students age 12 to 25.

The plan offers this target group a much longer credit expiry date — until they turn 25 — as well as low call and SMS charges.

Divided into two packages — School of X (SOX) for students age 12 to 18 and University of X (UOX) for those between 18 to 25 — the subscriber pays 15sen per minute for calls and one sen for each text message sent.

If they subscribe to the 8pax option (cheaper rates to communicate with eight others Celcom users), the company will only charge them 10sen per minute for calls and each SMS only incurs a 0.5sen charge.

Additionally, videocall rates are 15sen per minute to other Celcom users and 30sen per minute to other networks.

Other prepaid bonuses, including the welcome bonus, every-month bonus, birthday bonus and reload bonus are also applicable with this newly-launched plan.

According to Celcom CEO Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly, the launch of SOX and UOX enables the company to specifically address the student market and their communication needs.

The difference in the two packages will be in the rewards and related activities that

Celcom will be introducing to the subscribers in upcoming months, he said.

The SOX and UOX starter packs are available for free but customers are required to purchase a RM10 prepaid reload card and bring along their identification card for registration purposes.

To prevent misuse, each customer can only register one SOX or UOX account. With regular Celcom prepaid plans, each user is allowed to register up to 10 numbers.

Written by ImagesLab.net on Thursday, September 04, 2008

According to MobileBurn, Motorola today launched its new MOTOJEWEL clamshell handset. Designed specifically with the female fashionista in mind, the MOTOJEWEL comes with its own mini clutch handbag that has just enough room for the Jewel, credit card and a lipstick.

We didn’t get many specs, but the device does feel basic at first glance. The MOTOJEWEL itself is armed with a 2.0 megapixel camera and a music player that syncs with Windows Media Player. The phone also comes with a “midnight quartz” exterior colour scheme and has a purple keypad inside.

The Jewel is only available for a limited time starting November.

Mobile Broadband

Written by ImagesLab.net on Monday, September 01, 2008

Mobile broadband is getting more popular these days. With this technology, internet users can browse the net via mobile phone or notebook anywhere as long as there is signal for 3G or 3.5G.

What's the requirement for mobile broadband? First of all, you will need a mobile phone that supports at least 3G or 3.5G. For notebook users, you will need a USB modem. There are so many internet service provider out there which offers different packages for different mobile broadband speed. The faster the speed, the more expensive it is.

Some of the benefits of using mobile broadband is that it does not require a LAN line or a fixed line. What do you need? A wireless modem. It spells absolute portability and you can surf anywhere within the HSDPA/3G/EDGE/GPRS networks. The best part of the modem is that it's plug and play.

So, what's the speed like? Depending on which service provider you're subscribing to, you'll easily find packages ranging from 2mb, 5mb, 8mb and 10mb. Some provider even offers up to 24mb! Tip: To make sure the speed you are getting is as per the package you've signed up for, it is advisable to run a speed test. That way, you'll know whether your service provider is taking advantage of you. :)

I've done a little research on UK broadband service provider, the leading mobile broadband are 3 Mobile, Vodafone and T-Mobile. Which service provider offers the best package? I think it is for you to judge, just go to their website and have a look at what kind of packages they offer.

Mobile broadband is suitable for everyone who can't live without the internet particularly internet junkie like me. I have tried one of the mobile broadband in my country, the speed is fast and it's really stable. If you are now looking for a mobile broadband for your internet connection, opt for wireless... it's really very convenient.
