Mobile to be used on planes

Written by ImagesLab.net on Monday, March 31, 2008

Everyone knows before they go on board a plane, the first thing they must do is to switch off their phone (I truthfully think this is common sense). However, even if you do not remember, there are often sufficient indication such as signboards as well as friendly reminder from the crews.

Say if you are about to travel and the flight will take about 15 hours, what do you do if there are some very important calls that you must answer? I found out about this great news for those frequent business travellers whereby they might be able to switch on their phone on the plane in the near future. Sounds interesting?

Wednesday March 26, 2008
Ofcom has confirmed plans to allow the use of mobile phones on UK-registered aircraft. It follows a consultation that the regulatory body published on Mobile Communications on Aircraft (MCA) services in October 2007 for the use of these services.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) have to grant approval to the systems before they are installed. Individual airlines can then decide if there is a big enough consumer demand to have these services fitted.

Passengers will be able to connect to an on-board base station using their handsets, both of which must be switched off during take-off and landing to ensure that mobile networks on the ground aren’t interfered with.

The system can be switched on once the aircraft reaches a minimum height of 3,000 metres. This will enable people to make and receive calls that will be routed via a satellite link to the network on the ground.

Handsets will initially connect to the system for 2G data, voice and text services and if the service is successful, 3G speeds may be introduced.

However David Tansley, telecoms partner at business advisory firm Deloitte, expressed doubts over the plans, suggesting there are still some questions to be answered.

“Ofcom’s announcement may be something of a red herring – getting approval from European aviation authorities for using mobiles in flight may be more onerous than getting approvals from the communication regulators,” he said.

“It is also unclear what level of call quality will be delivered and what the practicable service issues will be, for example, frequent call drop outs. However, the convenience on offer for business travellers may offset any quality issues.”

If this is real, few years later I believe that this will applicable to all the plane in the whole world. And we might see passengers talking on the phone in the planes which we can't see it now.

Preview : Nokia 6300i

Written by ImagesLab.net on Friday, March 28, 2008

Still remember the slim candy bar Nokia 6300 model launched almost 2 years back? Which looks something like this...

Nokia 6300

Yes! Nokia had just launched a newer version of it. It's called Nokia 6300i.

The main difference between 6300 and 6300i is that Nokia 6300i offers a fully integrated and easy-to-use VoIP client (via WLAN 802.11b/g) combined with a Tri-band GSM/EDGE mobile phone. Or in other words, it means that it has Wifi... :)

Nokia 6300i includes a 2.0 megapixel camera, FM stereo radio, Media Player, Bluetooth 2.0 (A2DP), and MicroSD expansion slot up to 2GB.

I would say this is an enhancement phone from Nokia. They've just upgraded the previous Nokia 6300. The design is the same, just that the colors are a bit different. Everything else is also the same except for the Wifi function in Nokia 6300i. Why can't they just upgrade the camera as well?

There's this question that I've always wanted to ask Nokia, when are you coming out with a new N73i model which will have Wifi function? Well, just joking... :)

Cabal Online

Written by ImagesLab.net on Monday, March 24, 2008

Remember I blog about the online game I joined last month - Granado Espada?

Guess what? I've quitted! Yeah... I've stopped Granado Espada and join Cabal Online instead.

I'm really addicted with Cabal Online. This game concept is quite similar to that of Granado Espada, World of Warcraft and the rest which require players to carry out quests for leveling. Currently I'm at level 45 and I don't feel bored at all. I think one of the reason is a few friends of mine from Ragnarok Online is also playing this game.

I'm playing warrior at the moment. There are few other characters which you can choose from; force archer, force blader, force shielder, blader and wizard.

One of the screenshot while I'm in the middle of a quest

Samsung SGH-F250 Live Loud Music Edition

Written by ImagesLab.net on Saturday, March 22, 2008

Lately, Samsung came out with its brand new so called "Music Edition" phone - Samsung SGH-F250.

It's attractive pricing will definitely make you go wild. It is economically priced at only RM768! Can you believe it? It is a tri-band GSM/EDGE slider with music playback navigation keys at the front and also a metallic keypad. Seems cool...

Since it is a music phone, I will first talk about the music function. The music player supports multi-codecs for playback of all your music files such as wav, mp3 and aac files. It also allows you to play music while you are doing something else with your phone - such as sms-ing or browsing the web.

Its Offline Mode lets you enjoy your mobile's features without accessing a phone signal; safe to use on planes or when you do not want to be disturbed, it becomes your Mp3 player when you are in offline mode. It supports music playtime of up to 14 hours.

This phone comes with 1.3MP camera; therefore it only allows you to take a very normal quality image. It supports 4X digital zoom and comes with 65k color, 128x160 pixel resolution screen and 20MB internal memory with microSD external memory which is expandable up to 2 GB.

What you pay is what you get. For less than RM800 to own a music phone, I think it is fairly reasonable. Couldn't really ask for more... :)

Hotlink Active 10

Written by ImagesLab.net on Wednesday, March 19, 2008

Can you recall few years back when Hotlink came out with their first ever Active 5? I used to be one of its subscriber during my Uni life. It's quite a common scene for students to be using a prepaid plan even till now.

Nowadays every telco company has their own strategies to attract more customers. Let's put it this way, almost all of the promotions from the different telcos are just about the same. The difference is just how you look at it.

In today's topic, I'm gonna introduce to you the latest promotion from Hotlink. The promo is quite similar to the previous Hotlink Active 5. It's just that there's an increase in the number of friends and family that can be chosen to enjoy the special rates (Up to 10 peoples from Hotlink or Maxis Postpaid numbers).

So... what's the rate if you are calling or smsing these 10 peoples?
Call : 15sen/min
SMS : 1sen/SMS

With this rate, it really made me feel like switching back to a prepaid plan, which seems much more cheaper than what I'm using now - Maxis RM75 Postpaid Plan. This plan really knock their competitors hard (Digi & Celcom). Well, we'll just wait and see, as I'm certain that Digi and Celcom will surely be coming out with something else to compete with Hotlink.

Actually, the only reason I dislike prepaid is because I will need to reload whenever the credit is low. I feel that it's a waste of time. Why can't the telcos just have some collaboration with local banks for automatic top-up by just deducting our savings/current account balance when our credit runs low? Some examples would be the Maybank Zing card that can auto reload the touch 'n go or the Ambank's NexG iTalk prepaid card that auto top up the credit for iTalk when it's running low. Anticipating that day to appear...

Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte

Written by ImagesLab.net on Tuesday, March 18, 2008

OMG OMG.... !!!

Finally Nokia announced their latest phone Nokia 8800 Sapphire Art which is priced at a whopping RM5,990!!!

Can you imagine paying around 6k for a mobile phone? It's crazy! Seriously I've got no idea what's so special about this phone. For me, it is not worth at all because its function and features are about the same as my phone which only costs RM1k+. I'll leave it to you to do the thinking and calculation whether it is really worthwhile...

Continental Mobiles

Written by ImagesLab.net on Tuesday, March 11, 2008

Have you ever thought of carrying a mobile phone made from 24 carat gold in your pocket?

I've got something for you that'll make your dream come true, if only you have some extra cash now.

PRICE TAG: £1199 GBP Sterling

PRICE TAG: £899 GBP Sterling

PRICE TAG: £1099 GBP Sterling

PRICE TAG: £699 GBP Sterling

PRICE TAG: £499 GBP Sterling

PRICE TAG: £799 GBP Sterling

PRICE TAG: £899 GBP Sterling

So what do you think about the price? Expensive for a 24k gold mobile phone? No joke, in fact you can purchase these phones at the continental mobile website.

For me, I think it's really pricey plus I can't afford this splurge at the moment. The "cheapest" one cost £499 GBP Sterling, which is approximately 3000 plus in Ringgit Malaysia. Wow!! It's better for me to get myself a new CPU with that amount of money. :P

New Streamyx Combos

Written by ImagesLab.net on Sunday, March 09, 2008

Recently Tm Net Streamyx announced their new packages namely the "Streamyx Combo".
Their main tag line for this promo is "Unlimited Broadband" and "No Fixed Line Rental".

Let me do some calculation here. I'm currently using 512 kbps at my house now and it costs me RM66 (internet) plus RM26 (fixed line rental). Total cost = RM92.

Tm Net's so called "No Fixed Line Rental" or you can refer to the chart Combo 2, will cost you RM90. It is only cheaper by RM2 ! Take 1mbps package for another example, will cost you RM88+RM24 = RM112. It is still only cheaper by RM2.

I thought if there's no fixed line rental shouldn't it be only RM66?? So is this a scam or they run out of ideas for their promos thus they came out with this meaningless packages? Have they ever thought what is the meaning of "NO FIXED LINE RENTAL"??

But but... their Combo 4 and Combo 5 looks attractive as normal charges for 2mbps is RM188 and 4mbps is RM268. If you are about to take the combo package, go for either Combo 4 or Combo 5. It is more worth the money spent. Combo 1,2 and 3 is totally useless...

Nokia Morph Concept

Written by ImagesLab.net on Tuesday, March 04, 2008

Ever heard of Nanotechnology? Nokia has created a new device called the "Nokia Morph Concept" which uses this latest technology.

Nokia Morph is a concept phone which allows user to transform their phone to shapes that they like. Let's take a closer look on the phone.

Launched alongside The Museum of Modern Art “Design and The Elastic Mind” exhibition, the Morph concept device is a bridge between highly advanced technologies and their potential benefits to end-users. This device concept showcases some revolutionary leaps being explored by Nokia Research Center (NRC) in collaboration with the Cambridge Nanoscience Centre (United Kingdom) – nanoscale technologies that will potentially create a world of radically different devices that'll open up an entirely new spectrum of possibilities.

Morph concept technologies might create fantastic opportunities for mobile devices:

* Newly-enabled flexible and transparent materials that blend more seamlessly with the way we live
* Devices become self-cleaning and self-preserving
* Transparent electronics offering an entirely new aesthetic dimension
* Built-in solar absorption might charge a device, whilst batteries become smaller, longer lasting and faster to charge
* Integrated sensors might allow us to learn more about the environment around us, empowering us to make better choices

In addition to the advances above, the integrated electronics shown in the Morph concept could cost less and include more functionality in a much smaller space, even as interfaces are simplified and usability is enhanced. All of these new capabilities will unleash new applications and services that will allow us to communicate and interact in unprecedented ways.

Flexible & Changing Design
Nanotechnology enables materials and components that are flexible, stretchable, transparent and remarkably strong. Fibril proteins are woven into a three dimensional mesh that reinforces thin elastic structures. Using the same principle behind spider silk, this elasticity enables the device to literally change shapes and configure itself to adapt to the task at hand.

A folded design would fit easily in a pocket and could lend itself ergonomically to being used as a traditional handset. An unfolded larger design could display more detailed information, and incorporate input devices such as keyboards and touch pads.

Even integrated electronics, from interconnects to sensors, could share these flexible properties. Further, utilization of biodegradable materials might make production and recycling of devices easier and ecologically friendly.

Self-Cleaning
Nanotechnology also can be leveraged to create self-cleaning surfaces on mobile devices, ultimately reducing corrosion, wear and improving longevity. Nanostructured surfaces, such as “Nanoflowers” naturally repel water, dirt, and even fingerprints utilizing effects also seen in natural systems.

Advanced Power Sources
Nanotechnology holds out the possibility that the surface of a device will become a natural source of energy via a covering of “Nanograss” structures that harvest solar power. At the same time new high energy density storage materials allow batteries to become smaller and thinner, while also quicker to recharge and able to endure more charging cycles.

Sensing The Environment
Nanosensors would empower users to examine the environment around them in completely new ways, from analyzing air pollution, to gaining insight into bio-chemical traces and processes. New capabilities might be as complex as helping us monitor evolving conditions in the quality of our surroundings, or as simple as knowing if the fruit we are about to enjoy should be washed before we eat it. Our ability to tune into our environment in these ways can help us make key decisions that guide our daily actions and ultimately can enhance our health.

A very futuristic phone I would say. For most of us, something that is so ultramodern and so ahead of its time almost only come into sight in "The Bond Guy - 007" films. However, I'm quite positive that it will be produced soon judging from the rapid pace technology is currently at. Perhaps in a couple of years to come? We've got totally no idea whatsoever when it might just suddenly appear in front of our very eyes. Who knows? To all phone lovers out there, please kindly be patient... :)

Gadget Magazine

Written by ImagesLab.net on Sunday, March 02, 2008

How's your weekend everyone? I had a great time on Saturday where I spend the whole day exploring Granado Espada and back working on Sunday (which is today). It's kinda boring to be working on a weekend. If you've tried it before, you'll definitely know what I mean.

Anyway, today I'll share with you one of my favorite magazine. So, what kind of magazine do I read? I guess you've already got the answer without needing me to reveal. But, if you haven't... please read on.

I prefer magazines that has technology content (gadgets & gizmo mag) such as the T3, PC Gamer, CHIP, MAXIT, and Mobile World Magazine.

T3 is by far my favorite as it has lots of up-to-date reviews and sneak-peaks not only on mobile phones but everything about consumer technology such as home entertainment, computing, hi-fi and gaming products. Their cover page is attractive at all times and will catch your attention very easily as they always have a sexy model to pose with the featured product. Not forgetting to mention that they have a section to compare different range of products and see which is the user's top choice. Cool?

For more info on subscription, please visit T3 Malaysia website.
