The GPS !
Written by ImagesLab.net on Thursday, April 24, 2008I was at Langkawi few days back and for your info, it's actually my first time there. Rented a car as soon as I landed and without any help from maps, I tried to find the way to the apartment. Well, the i550w really comes in handy at the right time. Initially, I had a slight difficulty finding my way to the apartment as I wasn't familiar with the road and I've got absolutely no clue at all where the apartment is situated.
The Samsung i550w pre installed NAVFone GPS really comes to my rescue. Luckily I did not go missing. Haha... Here are some of the screen shots I took during my journey at the island. From Perdana Beach (the place where I stayed) to the airport, Kuah (town), jetty, cable car or even to the under water world. I can reached all these places easily, thanks to the GPS. :)
The start up screen "NAVFone" and I loaded the map to North as I'm in Langkawi which is in Kedah.
When the GPS located my position, the arrow will be in red color.
Searching the destination that I want to go and there you go the GPS !
Few screenies I took. The orange colored lines are the route to follow to reach destination. :P
I know some of you might be confused with the GPS function. Below are some FAQ I managed to grabbed from NAVFone website:
How do I know if I am connected to GPS?
The red arrow on the map will indicate that you are indicate that you are connected to GPS, and it will show your current position. To get connected to GPS, you can select Menu -> Navigation -> Connect to GPS or simply dial "4" as shortcut.
Why is my map not moving although I have opt to connect to GPS?
Your device may be connected to the GPS receiver but the receiver has yet to acquire valid GPS signal. The GPS will take 2-3 mins to log for signal for the first time.
How do I ensure that I have GPS signal?
You have to be in an outdoor environment with clear line of sight of the sky. The GPS signal may be weak if you are in the tunnel or under a canopy. A yellow arrow will be displayed if the GPS signal is lost.
Why do I lost GPS signal although I am outdoor?
There various factors that affects the reception of GPS signal eg, tall buildings, cloudy sky, car with heat reflective windscreen etc.
If I do not connect to GPS, can I still view routing information?
Yes, you can continue to plan route or simulate the route by selecting "Route Playback" from "Navigation" menu. Alternatively, select "Toggle" to view the different format of route information.
When to use “Where am I” via GPS or GSM?
GPS can only be used outdoor where else GSM can be used in both indoor and outdoor.
Is there cost using "Where am I" via GPS?
No. GPS which stands for Global Positioning System utilized available satellites to determine your position, does not incur any network charges.
More FAQ, you might want to visit NAVFone.
I've bought quite a lot of duty free stuffs and there's also this nice place called Coco Beach Restaurant at Pantai Cenang which I really recommend whereby you can enjoy watching the sunset while having your dinner. Just imagine picturesque postcards...

Hey, thanks for the NAVFone FAQ. It's great that you can figure out how to work this thingy. I'm having a bit of difficulty with it, not the techy type at all. Enjoy your holiday in Langkawi.

hi syed,
1st of all you need to check whether India map is pre loaded in the phone. if yes, then by all mean you can use the gps. You don't need to pay a single cents using the gps ( it uses satellite).

I dont think its loadad because, I'm buying the phone from Saudi Arabia as i'm here for vacation,n i dont think its available in India.I'm just buying it here in Saudi Arabia,n takin it back to India. so i'm guessing India maps wont b available on the phone. will i b able to download maps for free from ne website for India? or would i have to download some other software with Indian maps on it from the internet? because i read somewhere on the internet that i'll have to pay 100Euros to activate GPS maps on the i550w.
