SGH i550W specification
Written by ImagesLab.net on Wednesday, April 16, 2008I suppose I've had enough of lazing around and the time has come for me to actually start with a brief specification intro for Samsung SGH i550W. I will not follow the way a typical phone review website is written where they divide into 2 or 3 columns for contrast and comparison. I think that way is boring and too technical.
I will separate this into a few paragraphs to better explain the general specification of the phone. Yes, a very general explanation. More details will be coming up after I've satisfactorily tested the phone.
Basically the things that I’m going to cover are the physical outlook of the phone/exterior (design), entertainment, connectivity, software, and the camera.
I purposely went and grab one of these from a mobile phone shop for my own reference.
To start with, lets look at the design of the phone. It is grouped under the candy bar phone category. Having the size of 115 x 53 x 13.8 mm but weighing at a mere 109g, I'm pretty surprised, because it is amazingly light. The most wonderful part (for me) was the size of the display screen. It has got a proud 2.6 inches, 240 x 320 pixel with TFT 262k colors screen! Are you astonished yet? With the 2.6 inches display screen size, it's more than sufficient for the user to browse the internet (not comparing with a PDA of course). As usual for phone nowadays, internal antenna is used for this model.
The second greatest part of the phone which delighted me most is certainly the Track Navigation. For your info, this phone doesn't have the up, down, left or right buttons. It actually has a small tiny track ball for you to scroll (just like the 'scroller' of a hand-held mouse) thus replacing the 4 buttons I mentioned earlier. It also comes with a 150 MB internal memory. The ability to support up to 4GB microSD is therefore another advantage of this phone.
Moving on to another section which is entertainment. I'm really keen about mobile phone entertainment which ranges from music, videos, themes, ring tones to screen savers. The Samsung i550W supports music files for MP3 / MIDI / ACC / ACC+ and WMA . For video files, it supports Video messaging, Video Streaming, Video telephony, MPEG4 / 3GPP / H.263 and H.264 (seriously I've got no idea what's the latter, but I will figure it out later). A2DP is being supported in this phone as well and not forgetting to mention it also has the FM radio function too. The only thing which is not supported is the TV receiver.
Progressing ahead, we have the phone connectivity part man!! HSPDA ! EDGE ! 3G ! GPRS ! BLUETOOTH ! USB Port ! And the most important of all, the WIFI !!! This light weight little one has got it ALL! Which means I can browse the internet at just about any WIFI spot. Omg!! Don't you think this is truly amazing?
It actually uses Nokia platform which is the Symbian 9.2 - S60 3.1 UI. Hmmm, I think Samsung have got the green light from Nokia to use Symbian on Samsung phones. This is the first ever Samsung phone which uses the Symbian S60. Since I'm a Nokia Symbian user, using this phone shouldn't pose any problem for me, hopefully.
Next, they have a standard PIM application just like most phones such as the calendar, to do list, scheduler, clock, world time, alarm, currency converter, converter and calculator. Oops... just in case you do not know what PIM stands for, it is actually an abbreviation for Personal Information Manager. Other applications such as adobe reader, document viewer, Yahoo, Google map and the 'WOW' application which makes me go gaga is the build-in GPS receiver with license included!! You can also opt to install your own application as well. :)
Last thing that I'm gonna write about is the camera functions. A phone normally comes with a 2.0 Megapixel, 3.2 Megapixel or 5.0 Megapixel build in camera. But this phone comes with a 3.0 Megapixel complete with 3x digital zoom as well as led flash. Max resolution is 2048x1536 pixels. Other settings for the camera includes the auto focus, multi shot, photo effects, video recording plus some other settings which I'm gonna explain later on.
The purpose of this post is to enlighten you on the basic features of the phone. If you are an avid reader of my blog, I'm sure you notice that I've actually searched in every nook and cranny looking for a phone with WIFI and GPS functions and comes at an affordable price for quite some time now.
Now I've finally found the Samsung SGH i550w at only RM1499! Definitely within my means.. :)
