Nokia N78 Review

Written by ImagesLab.net on Tuesday, July 01, 2008

After so many N series, Nokia is still coming out with a new N series model. This time around it's called the Nokia N78.

Nokia N78 comes in my favorite color; which is black. I always love getting my device in black color, just like my N73 in black. :)

First look at the phone, a candy bar phone with large display screen and simple design. The dimension of this phone is 113 x 49 x 15.1mm and it weighs 102 grams. When I mentioned large display, it must be at least 2.4 -inches and yes, Nokia N78 comes with a 2.4" TFT 16 million colors screen with 240 x 320 pixels. Should be good enough huh? From the design, it looks a tad bit similar to the Nokia N82. Agree?

I somehow feel that the keypads for the N78 are slightly small for guys that have chubby fingers. Luckily I don't have such problem, but once you're familiar with it, I guess there shouldn't be any major problem. On the center part, there's a silver-ish square navigator for up, down, left and right. Silver always makes a great pair with black.

Nokia N78 runs on Symbian 9.3 OS with Series60 3rd Edition user interface. It is pre-installed with the feature pack 2 as well. Just a quick explanation, the feature pack 2 (FP2) is to enhance the visual and performance of the phone. Since it runs on Symbian, it allows full customization on the phone such as its themes, applications, games and lots more. Gawd, Symbian phones are just irresistible!

Let's take a look at the music player. It supports MP3, AAC, eAAC+ and WMA format audio. The music player allows user to sort songs by album, artist, and genre. Audio files can be transfered via the USB cable which comes with the package, or just by using Bluetooth. Another option is to take out the memory card and slot it into a card reader for a direct transfer. Of course this phone also support A2DP profile. From research, the audio quality is not as good as I've expected. The speaker will make squeaking noise when volume is tuned to high. A better alternative is to listen to Mp3 or FM radio using the headphones.

The camera function is another important part to look at. The N78 is equipped with a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Lens. It has the auto-focus functions (expected) and only has a LED flash, what a waste. The maximum resolution for a photo taken is 2048 x 1536 pixels. In terms of setting, it can really compete with those 5mp phone such as the N95. It has features such as white balance, ISO sensitivity and including exposure compensation, sharpness and contrast settings.

Wifi, 3G with HSDPA and GPS are all in for Nokia N78. No lagging problem so far as it is using a 369 MHz processor to run the OS. Almost a perfect phone I would say.

Last word from PhoneLover, "Another great phone from Nokia".
