How To Choose a Laptop or Notebook?

Written by ImagesLab.net on Wednesday, December 24, 2008

Laptop computers are very common nowadays. You will see people with laptop at shopping complex, cafe or restaurant.

You might want to consider a few things before deciding to purchase one. The first thing is how big you want the LCD to be? There are many different sizes of laptop LCD, from 8.9" (Dell Mini 9), 14.1", 15.4" to 17". If you are a graphic designer, I would suggest the 17 inch laptop computers. Well, it depends on the individual which size they need, of course the bigger the LCD is, the heavier the laptop will be. I'm using the 14.1 inches and I'm very happy with it.

Other than that, you will need to consider what kind of CPU, video card, hard disk space and ram you need. Higher specification definitely comes with matching prices, which means it's pricier. If you are looking for best cheap laptops then you might want to consider used/second hand laptop which are mostly available in good condition. Prices for brand new laptops are becoming cheaper compared to previous years. Just do a little survey before making any purchases. It'll help a lot, trust me.

For recommendation, I will strongly suggest you, Dell Computers. They are also very good at after sales service. And yes, I am using the Dell Inspiron 1420. :)

iPhone and Blackberry Storm

Written by ImagesLab.net on Tuesday, December 16, 2008

If you are reading most of the gadget reviews site, there are some hot products they are discuss about, the iPhone and Blackberry Storm.

According to some research, iPhone 3G is the most purchased mobile phone in US. In the third quarter of 2008 the top ranked mobile phones, based on adult sales were:

1. Apple’s iPhone (3G)
2. Motorola’s RAZR (V3)
3. RIM’s Blackberry Curve
4. LG’s Rumor
5. LG’s enV2

The Blackberry Storm looks something like an iPhone, it uses a touchscreen technology that requires you to apply pressure when typing on the on-screen keyboard. This might be a good thing for those who are used to notebooks (like me), it might be disorienting for ex-Apple iPhone users.

Do click on the link in the post to get more info about the phones.

I also got myself an extra data cable that I can bring along with my laptop and a 4GB SD card to replace my current 1GB SD card. Now I can store even more mp3s and photos in my mobile.

Get your cell phone accessories here, they sell batteries, data cable, memory card, bluetooth headset and many more !!

Gears of War 2

Written by ImagesLab.net on Thursday, December 11, 2008

Today my post will be a little bit out of topic as I'm going to talk about Gears of War 2 for Xbox 360. :)

"The original Gears of War became an action genre classic thanks to its incredible graphics, cinematic presentation, and solid cover system. The sequel repeats this formula, and though it introduces new weapons, enemies, and environments, it remains an incredible yet familiar experience. The 10-hour campaign is rambunctiously entertaining, with clever set pieces and epic confrontations that punctuate the exhilarating stop-and-pop gunplay. The multiplayer offers more significant upgrades, with four new modes, 10 new maps, and support for up to 10 players instead of eight. These things make for a package with significant longevity, and though Gears of War 2 ultimately refines more than it innovates, it still deserves a place in any action fan's collection.

Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago return in Gears of War 2, heading underground to bring the fight to the Locust.

Gears of War 2 picks up the story six months after the end of the first game. The Locust are so powerful that they can sink entire cities from below, whereas the humans are becoming even more desperate thanks to the spread of a disease called rust lung. With fears that the last city of Jacinto might fall, it's down to Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago to take the fight to the Locust in a desperate last stand against their alien foes. Survival is at the centre of Gears 2, but there's also personal drama, with themes such as family, death, and even love interwoven into the grand plot. This sheds some light on the characters and the universe, and though it ultimately uncovers more questions than it answers, the game has a much grander premise than its predecessor.

In terms of gameplay, Gears 2 is fundamentally the same as the original game, but fans of the series should be able to spot some key refinements. The cover system has been honed so that you cling more accurately to surfaces, and the weapons have received subtle alterations to make them even more balanced than before. The revival system has also been tweaked considerably. Not only can your AI teammates heal you if you're injured, but now you can also tap A to crawl toward them more quickly when you're injured. This makes the game a lot fairer in terms of difficulty and allows for some heart-pounding moments as you race to your teammates to avoid a fatal curb-stomping from the opposition.

Gears of War 2 introduces more backstory to the characters and the universe, but it ultimately throws up more questions than answers.

Although the assault rifle is still the go-to firearm for the duration of the campaign, there are plenty of other weapons to play with. New to the Gears universe is the flamethrower, which doesn't have a great range but is excellent for dealing with groups of enemies that get a little too close for comfort. Then there are the heavy weapons, which stop you from being able to roadie run but make up for this with their immense power. The mulcher is a high-calibre chain gun that can cut through even the biggest enemies in a single burst, whereas the mortar rains down a shower of explosives from afar. Grenades have also seen improvements; you can stick them to surfaces so they become proximity mines, there's a new model that gives off noxious gas, and the smoke grenade delivers a concussive blast that knocks surrounding players off of their feet. All of these new weapons are great fun to use, and crucially, they're well balanced for use in multiplayer.

The first Gears of War was brutally over-the-top in its violence, and the sequel manages to take this even further. You now have four ways of executing your enemies, all of which are mapped onto the face buttons of the joypad. X performs the standard curb-stomp, B delivers a quicker blow to the back of the head, and Y flips your foe over for repeated punches to the face. Finally, the A button lets you grab the wounded enemy to use as a meat shield, affording you some protection until you decide to finish it off with a neck-break. The signature chainsaw move has been adapted so you cut upward from the crotch if you approach from the rear, and if two players ready their saws, they enter a duel that's won by whoever taps the B button the fastest. These new additions improve on the already gritty and satisfying melee combat of the original Gears of War and make close-quarters combat even more gruesomely rewarding.

Gears of War 2 has a considerably different look from its predecessor. Whereas the first game was characterised by derelict cities and crumbling monuments, a good portion of the sequel takes place in huge outdoor spaces and underground caverns. You'll see fluorescent lights, snow-capped mountains, and enemies so big you'll actually need to get inside them to destroy them. There are also more vehicle sections, and though they can be a bit fiddly to use, these segments are thankfully short and infrequent. The traditional stop-and-pop gunplay still makes up the majority of the campaign, and it's a raucously enjoyable ride that you'll want to play again and again.

The new game modes add more variety and longevity to the Gears multiplayer.

Gears of War 2 is best when played with friends, and the entire campaign now features drop-in support and independent difficulty levels for two players. The competitive multiplayer has also been substantially improved and now offers more players, maps, and game modes to select. Warzone, Execution, Assassination, and Annex modes all make a return, along with King of the Hill, which was introduced in the PC version of the game. There are also three new standard multiplayer modes called Submission, Guardian, and Wingman. Submission is a variation on Capture the Flag, but here the flag is a civilian who you carry to the checkpoint using the meat-shield technique. The hostage also carries a gun and is hostile to anyone who comes close, making for a really great twist on the traditional CTF game mode. Guardian is a team-based game with a designated leader; keep the leader alive and everyone else can respawn, but if the leader dies then that privilege is over. Finally, Wingman splits players into teams of two, with the emphasis on working together to kill and revive. You've probably seen these game modes before in other games, but they fit perfectly into Gears of War 2 and add even more variety and longevity to online play. Thankfully, the benefits of being the host online have also been lessened, making the online experience much fairer across the board.

The final multiplayer mode is called Horde, and it's the most addictive and challenging take on Gears yet. It could be described as a cross between single- and multiplayer, in which a team of five COGs take on wave after wave of Locust enemies. As long as one player stays alive at the end of each round, the entire team respawns and the game keeps going, with progressively bigger and more difficult enemies. It's an incredibly tense and exciting game mode, and despite the steep difficulty curve, it's highly rewarding to play with friends. Gears 2 is also accommodating to new players and those without Internet connections, with five training missions and bot support for every multiplayer mode except Horde. The bots are surprisingly good at replicating human players, and they make great practice for people who have never played the game online.

Gears of War 2 includes a total of 10 new multiplayer maps, plus a code to download five remastered maps from the original game. The new maps take inspiration from the locations in the campaign, whereas new environmental effects change some of the maps as you're playing. For example, Hail features razor-sharp rain that gradually kills anyone out in the open. Furthermore, Day One has a huge emergence hole in which a beast can take swipes at any surrounding players. Finally, Avalanche is completely transformed when a snowstorm hits, turning it from a multitiered level into one flat plane. These environmental effects don't feature in every map and game mode, but they definitely liven up standard deathmatch-style multiplayer game types such as Warzone.

The sequel introduces training missions and bots that you can play in nearly all of the multiplayer game modes.

The original Gears of War was a spectacular-looking game, and the sequel maintains this high technical and artistic quality. Instead of pushing for increased visual fidelity, the graphics engine adds a couple of other dimensions to the presentation, with walls that crumble under gunfire and dozens of enemies onscreen at once. These new features don't necessarily affect the gameplay, but they look good and help add to the dramatic scale that the designers have chosen. The new organic capabilities of the Unreal Engine make for one particularly memorable level in which you literally have to kill a giant enemy from the inside. Gears of War 2 also has impeccable sound design, with terrific voice acting, meatier weapon effects, and another beautiful cinematic score.

Gears of War 2 has a lot in common with its predecessor, but the new environments, darker storyline, and epic scale certainly have a lot to offer fans. The new weapons, melee attacks, and co-op options make for a campaign that you'll want to complete a number of times, and the new multiplayer modes give the game variety and longevity. Simply put, Gears of War 2 is a superior shooter that no action fan will want to miss out on."

Malaysia Airlines to allow cell phones

Written by ImagesLab.net on Wednesday, December 10, 2008

Here's a local news I wish to share with my readers.

Malaysia Airlines on unveiled a new service allowing passengers to make and receive calls on their mobile phones while in air on some routes.

Passengers can also send and receive text messages, and use their Blackberry-type devices to send and receive e-mails, Malaysia Airlines, or MAS, said in a statement.

It said the airline teamed up with AeroMobile, a British company, to become the first Asian carrier to offer in-flight mobile phone and data services via satellite with passengers using their own equipment.

Customers can now safely use their mobile phone or Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) during the flight without affecting the aircraft systems and ground telecommunication networks, the statement said.

The service is currently available on a single Boeing 777-200 aircraft, which flies on different days to selected European, Australian and Asian destinations including China and Japan, said the statement.

The system will be installed on all wide-bodied aircraft in the MAS fleet by next year if it proves to be successful, said MAS chief executive Idris Jala.

"This is one of the in-flight service comforts that we are introducing on a trial basis for our customers," he said. "With this facility, we definitely have a competitive edge and firmly believe that both our business and leisure passengers will very much welcome this new service," he added.

Users will be billed on their regular phone bills by their own service providers as with any other international roaming call.

Passengers will be encouraged to switch their phones to silent or vibrate mode when using them in the aircraft, said the statement.

Google Earth in iPhone

Written by ImagesLab.net on Saturday, November 08, 2008

Google released an iPhone version of their highly popular desktop application Google Earth. Not only can you roam the virtual Earth viewing satellite imagery but you can also view selected terrains in 3D just by tilting your iPhone. The iPhone OpenGL graphics seems well suited for an intensive application like Google Earth. Dam cool huh ...

The new Google Earth application can be download straight to your iPhone (2G or 3G) via the Apple AppStore for free. You can use this link (opens iTunes if you have it installed).

When you start off the App you will see the 3D Earth from space. To zoom in just double tap or use the well-known iPhone gesture. You can drag the virtual map with finger swipes just as easily as you would on the native Google Maps application. This time however you can rotate the map as you like by twisting two fingers on screen. I hope I owned an iPhone now.

You can pinpoint your location using either GPS or cell tower triangulation. You can also search places in general or ones near your location. And finally you can always realign your map to point to North by clicking on the compass in the top right corner.

The nice thing about Google Earth (and what makes it better than Maps) is that it's loaded with information - geotagged photos from Panoramio and text articles from Wikipedia. If there are any of those available for the location you are looking at, you'll see small clickable icons on screen.

Using the 3D mode is as easy as it gets. If you use Google Earth with the iPhone parallel to the ground, just lift it up in portrait position and you'll see the virtual horizon and hopefully some 3D terrain (not available at all places).

LG KS500 Preview

Written by ImagesLab.net on Thursday, November 06, 2008

The latest LG KS500 is one of those handsets that won't get your attention on first look but it packs quite a punch under its unassuming looks. The nifty slider boasts a 3 megapixel camera, a QVGA display, a GPS receiver with Yahoo! Go maps application and quite possibly an affordable price tag.

Contrary to many of the online rumors, which spawned when the device was first leaked through the US FCC website, it's now finally clear that LG KS500 is not a smartphone.

The LG KS500 is a tri-band GSM phone which offers dual-band UMTS/HSDPA support. Measuring 102.8 x 49.2 x 14.9 mm doesn't really make it the most compact chap on the block, but still it's nothing too big.

The KS500 has a 262K color display of QVGA resolution, a 3 megapixel fixed focus camera (sad, we know), 100MB of built-in memory and a microSD card with support for an addition 8GB.

Although it doesn't sound ground-breaking by any means, you might be interested to know that the LG KS500 is the first handset by the South Korean company to feature an optical touchpad. It helps navigation through the menus or the web browser.

Unlike similar Samsung solutions, with the KS500 you can opt for turning off the optical trackpad in the menus, but leaving it on for an extra sweet experience in the web browser, which we guess will be the mouse-enabled NetFront 3.4 variety.

And finally, the LG KS500 brings GPS connectivity with A-GPS support. Yahoo! Go maps and location services application is preinstalled on board to make finding your way around that much easier. Of course, you can always add Google Maps for Mobile if you wish.

We don't know much on the projected availability or pricing of the LG KS500, but judging on the Vodafone brand on the official photos, you will be able to find it through Vodafone networks, so a nice, subsidized price seems a fair guess.

Nokia Games Summit 2008

Written by ImagesLab.net on Tuesday, November 04, 2008

Games lover might love this news...

29 October 2008 – Nokia hosts games industry leaders from around the world today in Rome, Italy to discuss openly about how to evolve, innovate and cooperate together to grow the mobile games business globally. In addition to discussions around trends in mobile gaming, publishers’ perspectives and visions of the future, attendees learn how the N-Gage service has been doing since its launch six months ago, hear how Nokia Games Publishing is innovating with new games like Dance Fabulous, and see concepts of the top three finalists of the Mobile Games Innovation Challenge.

“With the N-Gage service now live for six months, we have a truly global service on offer with sales transactions in over 130 countries and tens of millions of N-Gage compatible devices available,” said Tero Ojanperä, executive vice president and head of the Nokia entertainment and communities business. “The most active players reside in the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Australia and Spain, but we’ve seen active players worldwide with repeat purchase rates over 35% globally. Game trials have also proved to be important, with download to purchase conversions up to 30%.”

“As we continue to scale with N-Gage, games remain a key part of our vision of context aware internet services and important to our overall services strategy,” Ojanperä continued. “But, we have a challenge for the future: how do we work together to innovate in this new environment, around Internet and services? The Nokia Games Summit is a great platform to discuss some of these challenges as well as the opportunities.”

Nokia Games Publishing has been creating unique made-for-mobile games for many years and the latest game coming exclusively to N-Gage in 2009 is Dance Fabulous. Players can create their own dance moves to any music stored on their mobile device. As they hone their dancing skills, players will be able to share their best choreographies with friends to see who has the most fabulous moves. Nokia together with music legend Dave Stewart, who is working with Nokia on the Nokia Artists’ Advisory Council, are introducing up-and-coming singer Cindy Gomez through the mobile game with brand new songs including the theme song, “Street Dancing”.

Publishers also continue to bring more games to N-Gage. EA Mobile, a division of Electronic Arts Inc, continues its support for N-Gage at the Nokia Games Summit with the announcement of an extensive global release schedule for the platform. EA will be bringing some of its popular franchises to N-Gage in the coming year, including EA SPORTS FIFA 09, Need For Speed Undercover and The Sims 3.

Asphalt 4: Elite Racing by Gameloft is also coming to N-Gage offering the largest number of high-end cars ever in your mobile device: 28 prestigious dream cars and bikes including the Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari F430 Spider, Nissan GT-R and Ducati 1098. Enjoy the real-time multiplayer mode to prove that you are the fastest

Samsung U800

Written by ImagesLab.net on Thursday, October 30, 2008

Samsung launched their new mobile phone, the Samsung U800 not long ago. Samsung U800 is a candy bar design phone. I think it has already been quite some time since Samsung last came out with a candy bar phone.

Samsung U800 is also known as “Samsung Soulb” – remember the previous Samsung Soul? Is this probably another revised version of that model? I don’t know. Anyway let’s take a look on the phone design and its features.

The Samsung U800 can be classified as a slim phone as it is only 9.9mm thick and it's elegantly coated with metallic finish. Colors to choose from includes Soul Grey, Platinum Silver, Metallic Black, Soul Pink and Amethyst Violet. I personally couldn't resist phones that comes with metallic finishes.

Samsung U800 comes with a 3-megapixel camera with LED flash. It could be better if it has at least a 5-megapixel camera with xenon flash. However, it should suffice for normal usage. In terms of connectivity, it supports HSDPA, EDGE, Bluetooth, and 3G. Not as bad as I thought. It also has a built in 1GB internal memory and microSD slot which provides sufficient space for users to store all music and pictures they love.

Feel free to treat this phone as your portable music player as there is a good music player installed in the phone. The music player allows user to display album art. You may also use the filter to choose, organize and group the music that you want to listen to by author, album, genre and composer. On top of that, there is a built-in FM radio RDS as well… cool huh?

Even though this phone is not run by Symbian, I am still amaze because you can still customize the main menu of the phone. There are 3 pre-installed themes in the phone and you can also create your own theme and customize every single element to suit your liking.

Other applications like the organizers (calendar, alarms and converter), internet browser and document viewer (MS Word, MS Excel and PDF files) are nothing really worth mentioning about as most of them are common applications that can be easily found on any phone.

Overall I still think Samsung U800 aka Samsung Soulb is a great phone to own if you are not looking for a high tech phone that comes with WiFi or GPS. The only improvement I hope to see would be an enhancement of the camera and if it's not to much to ask for, perhaps a built-in WiFi please?

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Written by ImagesLab.net on Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Nokia Remix, London, United Kingdom and Singapore - Nokia turned up the volume on its music offering today by unveiling the new Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, a mobile device for music that brings innovative new features to the mass market. Delivering on Nokia's vision to provide the best total music experience possible, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will be among the first devices to support Comes With Music, Nokia's groundbreaking service which offers one year of unlimited access to the entire Nokia Music Store catalogue.

When it comes to music phones, people all over the world want a device that is a great music experience - with more memory, loud and powerful speakers, easy synchronization - and must still work well as a mobile phone with direct access to important contacts and content. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic delivers on all counts and allows consumers to access and share content. "With the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, we set out to connect people through the one thing we all feel a universal connection to - music," said Jo Harlow, Vice President, Nokia. "The way in which people enjoy music is different around the world. With that in mind, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic gives people thefreedom to experience music they love in the way they prefer."

Media Bar, Contacts Bar - putting people first
Taking advantage of touch screen technology, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic introduces the 'Media Bar', a handy drop down menu that provides direct access to music and entertainment, including favourite tracks, videos and photos. The Media Bar also offers a direct link to the web and to online sharing. Because the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic supports Flash content, individuals can surf the entire web, not just pieces of it. In addition, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic offers all the music essentials, including a graphic equalizer, 8GB memory for up to 6000 tracks and support for all main digital music formats, and a 3.5mm jack. Built-in surround sound stereo speakers offer the industry's most powerful sound.

Ensuring a seamless music experience, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic also provides easy access to browse and purchase tracks from the Nokia Music Store, where applicable, while the newly updated Nokia Music PC software allows for easy drag-and-drop transfer of songs and management of any music collection.

The innovative 'Contacts Bar' lets consumers highlight four favorite contacts on their home-screen and, through a single touch, track a digital history of recent text messages, emails, phone logs, photos and blog updates.

"As Nokia's first mass-market device with a touch screen, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic turns a 'user interface' into a 'human interface' by truly putting people first. For example, we've introduced the Nokia Contacts Bar, which is like a digital RSS feed on your life," said Harlow. "By adding the benefits of touch screen technology to S60, the world's leading smartphone interface, Nokia is taking the familiar and giving it a human touch. We have used touch technology where it really adds value such as the Contacts Bar, Media Bar and clever shortcuts from the homescreen to menu items such as calendar, profiles and clock. "

For the best screen resolution available on a mobile phone, the 3.2" widescreen display brings photos, video clips and web content to life in vibrant color and true clarity. With a 16 by 9 aspect ratio and 30 frames-per-second playback and recording, the device is ideal for VGA quality video recording and playback.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic also features a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and, with a single touch, images or videos can be shared via a favorite online community, such as Share on Ovi, Flickr, or Facebook. Music playlist song titles can also be shared through Bluetooth, MMS or online sharing.

Music for the masses
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic supports 60 languages worldwide, which covers nearly 90 percent of the world's population. As people around the world use their phones in different ways, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic offers a variety of input methods including a virtual alphanumeric keypad, a virtual computer-style QWERTY keyboard, a pen stylus -- and for true music enthusiasts, a plectrum -- are all available.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will be available worldwide beginning in the fourth quarter of 2008 for an estimated retail price of 279 EUR before taxes and subsidies. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic featuring Comes With Music will be available early next year. Pricing details to follow.

Enhancing the experience, Nokia today unveiled four new music accessories including a new Bluetooth headset and three new stereo headsets.

DiGi's 1 Low Flat Rate plan for MNP

Written by ImagesLab.net on Wednesday, October 22, 2008

Here's some local news for you all....

KUALA LUMPUR, 16 October 2008: DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd ("DiGi") believes that its 1 Low Flat Rate to all networks across prepaid, postpaid and business segments gives customers the best value and DiGi the edge over competition with Mobile Number Portability (MNP).

Johan Dennelind, CEO of DiGi said, "We were the first to introduce 1 Low Flat Rate, a winning proposition in an MNP environment, where you don't have to worry about costs of calling other networks. DiGi is in a sweet spot and will continue to be at the forefront in delivering value to customers."

Dennelind together with over 300 DiGi employees spent the afternoon getting customers to switch to DiGi at a street carnival in Golden Triangle, KL. DiGi also has aggressive plans to paint the town yellow in other key urban centers.

"We have always given customers relevant reasons to stay with us. Hence, MNP opens up the flood gates for number-sensitive customers to make the Smarter Choice for greater savings, better connection with friends and family, latest innovation, best rewards and to top it off, excellent customer experience."

In addition to absorbing the porting fee, DiGi is offering prepaid consumers who switch an automatic 365 days validity at no additional cost. Meanwhile, customers who port to DiGi's Postpaid will enjoy free activation without any advance payment needed.

DiGi is also making it easy for customers to switch. Customers are given options to either go to DiGi's outlets across the country or do it online from the comfort of their homes. For the latter, customers need only to submit their requests at www.digi.com.my/switch and a SIM pack will be delivered to their doorsteps for free.

Dennelind also explained that MNP comes at an opportune time for DiGi to grow out of its comfort prepaid zone and aggressively look at growing its postpaid market.

"This is a natural progression for growth as DiGi matures. With less than 20% of the postpaid market share, MNP allows us to further tap into the space dominated by high usage users who care about their bill.

"MNP puts Malaysia on a par with advanced telecommunication nations. This is an industry milestone that is set to raise the bar on mobile user experience. The race has begun and we are excited at the opportunity to bring the DiGi experience to more Malaysians. Welcome to DiGi!"

For more information on DiGi's MNP offerings, you can visit www.digi.com.my/switch

Mobile Broadband

Written by ImagesLab.net on Wednesday, October 22, 2008

Nowadays mobile broadband has become excessively common among many of us. Wherever you go, you will probably see people with their laptop or mobile phone and they are conveniently browsing the net almost everywhere.

And due to the high demand of mobile broadband, more and more service provider are targeting to tap into this massive and lucrative market. Mobile broadband deals / prices have been falling rapidly over the past few years making these technologies very much affordable to those requiring this service.

So, how do we choose a good mobile broadband service provider? From my experience, the most important is the speed of the broadband / internet. Second, is the package offered by the service provider. Most service provider will ask you to sign a bond usually for a period of 12 to 24 months depending on the package offered. Of course there are also some provider that offers cheap broadband.

For those who are new and is currently considering which mobile broadband company to choose from, do spent a little of your time to read some review or comments by "Googling" it, there are quite a number of them out there.

Some helpful tips. Firstly, it is important to ask yourself why do you need mobile broadband. Is it solely for downloading files or normal usage of browsing the net or for checking e-mails? The reason why you need to determine this is to enable you to choose the right package that best suit your needs. Some package offers unlimited access to the internet which is suitable for those that needs to download a lot of data, and some package offers certain hours per month (e.g.: 60 hours per month) but you will need to fork out extra if you exceeded the limit.

The broadband market is very competitive these day and some provider even offers mobile broadband with free laptop. Of course there are certain terms and conditions that will apply.

Do consider these factors before signing up any mobile broadband service as it may save you the hassle of switching providers later on.

Samsung Innov8 Run!

Written by ImagesLab.net on Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Just checked my inbox and found that I have an e-mail from BlogMob. This time around it's in conjunction with Samsung (again... haha...), they're organizing an event called the "Samsung Innov8 Run!" which require participants to spend a day with the phone on a fun drive. I'm guessing it would be some sort like a treasure hunt or race thingy.

To join this event, they require me to tell them the reasons why I want to participate. Since the event is called Samsung Innov8 Run!, there will be 8 reasons in total for my entry submission:

1. I love trying out new phones (because I'm a PhoneLover - read my blog name!)
2. I love meeting new people out there who shares the same passion with me about latest phones and technology.
3. I wish to try out the 8mp camera to capture every moment during the event (and meanwhile forgoing my Alpha for a day)
4. To try out the GPS functions (I'm from Klang Valley but I hardly know every single road here and was hoping the GPS will help solve my so-called problem)
5. I've never participated in any sort of events that require me to drive around before (since I'm guessing this to be 'treasure hunting / racing event', but who knows) and yes I have a valid driving license and do own a car (so one criteria fulfilled) :p
6. I fell in love with it as it has to be one of the most tasteful phones I've ever laid my eyes on.
7. I wanna be one of the first in Malaysia to hold this baby in my palms (*drools*)
8. I think my existing phone is old enough, it's time for me to 'get' a new one (Oops... should I say win a new phone) LOL...

Now, please reserve me a seat for this event. Please...

For more info about this event, you can go to http://blogmob.mobileworld.com.my/ or http://www.innov8run.com/

Nokia N96 Review

Written by ImagesLab.net on Wednesday, October 01, 2008

Nokia launched their latest Nokia N96 during the Mobile World Congress. Let's take a look at what Nokia N96 has to offer.

Nokia N96 is a quad band phone with dual band HSDPA that runs on Symbian S60 3rd edition. It has a large 2.8" screen and 16 GB of internal memory (expandable for additional 8GB). Honestly, I'm quite surprise with the large storage capacity.

Nokia N96 is a dual slide phone like the previous N95’s design. The black color design simply spells stylish and elegant. There's a 5 mega pixel Carl Zeiss camera attached, and it's ringed in silver housing that flips out to act as a stand for the phone while viewing video. Another thing is the single LED flash of the N95 has been replaced by a double LED one in the N96, but unfortunately does not have the Xenon of flash of the N82.

Let’s move on to the user interface, as I mention it uses the Symbian S60 3rd edition (Features Pack 2) which means the graphic displayed will look better, smoother and without any delays if we open multiple applications.

I will now talk about the quality of the camera. For outdoors, quality turned out very well. You can even do a close up shot for a flower/insect, no problem at all. For indoors, the quality is not as good as the former. Sad to say that it only comes with LED flash, without xenon flash. What a waste. You may capture video up to 30 fps and it has the option called video stabilization.

The sound quality of the music player is just nice if you have the right headphone for it. If you’re using the built in speaker, the sound is loud enough.

The Nokia N96 retains the same 128MB RAM/256MB ROM found on the N95 8GB, but has an upgraded processor from the 332MHz ARM 11 found on the original to Dual CPU ARM 9 running at just 2x264MHz.

The Nokia N96 comes with 3G, Wifi function, Bluetooth, and built in GPS.

By looking at the functions and features of the N96, I would say it’s the best mobile phone (symbian phone) for the year. The only critic is that the camera don’t come with xenon flash. Other than that, the features are up to my expectation.

T-Mobile G1

Written by ImagesLab.net on Wednesday, September 24, 2008

That's it folks, the HTC-made T-Mobile G1 is now official with pre-orders due to open over at the dedicated T-Mobile website. The device will start shipping in US stores as of 22nd October and will be selling for 179 US dollars with two-year voice and data contract.

T-Mobile will be offering obligatory voice and messaging plans for the G1 priced at 25 (unlimited data, limited msg) and 35 US dollars (unlimited data and msg) on top of their regular voice plans. The G1 is SIM-locked and it won't be available with a prepaid service.

The T-Mobile G1 will also be available in the UK beginning in November, and across T-Mobile's European markets (Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and the Netherlands) in Q1 2009. European pricing is not yet known but we guess it has to be competitive to the one of the iPhone 3G.

Hardware-wise the T-Mobile G1 sports a 3.2-inch display touchscreen display, QWERTY keyboard, quad-band GSM/EDGE and dual-band UMTS support, GPS, Wi-Fi and a built-in accelerometer. We already mentioned that the camera won't support video recording and the Bluetooth support will be limited to mono headset use only (no stereo and no file transfers). The Bluetooth functionality will be enhanced later on.

The software part of the T-Mobile G1 is much more interesting as it's the first Android device to see daylight. The G1 will make use of all Google online services such as Gmail (with push support), YouTube, Google Talk, Google Maps with Street View, AmazonMP3 marketplace for affordable DRM-free tracks and finally, Google's own Android Market, which would supply the handset with third-party applications over-the-air. A unique feature to the G1 is the embedded compass, which syncs with Maps Street View allowing live 360-degree cityscape browsing just by turning the handset around.

At this stage the T-Mobile G1 lacks MS Exchange support, but doors are opened to third-party developers. There's also no desktop synchronization client, syncing is only possible to Google online services such as Gmail, Calendar and etc.

All in all, the T-Mobile G1 is disappointing - while the Android OS sounds like a powerful base, its first implementation fails to impress. The G1 has a low-key SideKick inspired design and lacks some key contemporary features such as Bluetooth file transfers and video recording.

So we waited a whole year now just to see a poor iPhone replica with a QWERTY keyboard that doesn't even look half as good. It seems HTC have not put any effort in the design - and even the functionality is flawed. So thanks, but no thanks! Let's see the next one, please!

Nokia E72

Nokia N75

A demo video of the latest and greatest business messaging devices by Nokia leaked online revealing the yet unannounced Nokia E72 and Nokia E75. The Nokia E72 is a full-QWERTY successor of the E71, while the E75 features a hybrid form factor incorporating both a normal keypad and a slide-out side QWERTY.

Both the Nokia E72 and E75 seem to have built-in GPS receivers and advanced email capabilities. Guess the other specs will be high-end as usual.

BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220

Written by ImagesLab.net on Sunday, September 14, 2008

RIM officially announced its first phone to come in the clamshell form factor - the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220. In addition to the one-off Blackberry form factor the Pearl Flip 8220 packs a no-thrills overall functionality and large size but still very decent looks.

The highlights of the Blackberry Pearl Flip 8220 include the company proprietary OS, Wi-Fi connectivity (with UMA support) and the traditional trackball navigation. The SureType QWERTY keyboard is also on-board and so is a 3.5mm audio output jack. The internal display of the Pearl Flip 8220 features QVGA resolution and there is a secondary external display with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels.

The new BlackBerry Pearl Flip measures 101.1 x 50 x 17.5 mm and weighs 102 grams. The size puts it in the category of the bar-shaped Blackberries even when not opened so you can bet it's a large cellphone. The Pearl Flip supports microSD cards for expanding the internal memory. The final extras include a 2 megapixel camera with video recording capabilities, Bluetooth and USB v2.0.

The BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 will become available at the beginning of this fall. The pricing details are to be announced at a later date.

Celcom Xpax plan for students

Written by ImagesLab.net on Sunday, September 07, 2008

Yes... Another prepaid plan from Celcom.

IN A bid to create brand affinity at a much tender age, Celcom recently unveiled an exclusive Xpax prepaid plan targeted at students age 12 to 25.

The plan offers this target group a much longer credit expiry date — until they turn 25 — as well as low call and SMS charges.

Divided into two packages — School of X (SOX) for students age 12 to 18 and University of X (UOX) for those between 18 to 25 — the subscriber pays 15sen per minute for calls and one sen for each text message sent.

If they subscribe to the 8pax option (cheaper rates to communicate with eight others Celcom users), the company will only charge them 10sen per minute for calls and each SMS only incurs a 0.5sen charge.

Additionally, videocall rates are 15sen per minute to other Celcom users and 30sen per minute to other networks.

Other prepaid bonuses, including the welcome bonus, every-month bonus, birthday bonus and reload bonus are also applicable with this newly-launched plan.

According to Celcom CEO Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly, the launch of SOX and UOX enables the company to specifically address the student market and their communication needs.

The difference in the two packages will be in the rewards and related activities that

Celcom will be introducing to the subscribers in upcoming months, he said.

The SOX and UOX starter packs are available for free but customers are required to purchase a RM10 prepaid reload card and bring along their identification card for registration purposes.

To prevent misuse, each customer can only register one SOX or UOX account. With regular Celcom prepaid plans, each user is allowed to register up to 10 numbers.
